Ai Sozos, a tiny, whitewashed chapel perched on a rock next to the sea in the Kalandos area, is one of those magical sights of lasting memory on Naxos. The church was built by a merchant after his boat, carrying olive oil and wine, sank in the area.
While battling the waves to save his life, the merchant vowed that if he survived he would build a small church in the area.
He poured olive oil and wine into the foundations as a tribute and named the church Ai Sozos, meaning Holy Savior.
