Kalantos, a seaside village with a population of approximately 100 permanent residents, is located at Naxos’s southernmost point.
The area is the island’s first post reached by migratory birds flying in from the African continent.
Like the Ammitis wetland, this spot has been designated a protected area for its rare fauna and flora.
One may spot all sorts of beautiful bird species, both at the wetland and the surrounding sea area, including herons, waders, struthioniformes, Yelkouan shearwaters (Puffinus yelkouan), European shags (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii) –mainly in the rocky section- and Cory’s shearwater birds.
A swim at sandy Kalantos beach is an ideal way to top off the bird watching here.
