Galini is a small farming village on Naxos built in amphitheatric fashion on the western side of the Eggares valley, with pretty houses and well-tended flower gardens. It overlooks the olive groves, orchards and vineyards in the valley which famous writer Nikos Kazantzakis described as paradisiacal.
Just 100m outside Galini is the Church of Panagia Attaliotissa, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, and some 500m further on is the impressive fortified monastery of Ypsili.
The village of Galini has some 300 permanent residents with a keen interest in maintaining traditional customs.
At Easter they light the perifanes (reed bundles) for the procession of the Epitaph, in Halloween thekordelati dance in the square, while on August 15, the Epitaph of the Holy Lady is processed through the village, followed by a big feast at the central square.
A small hotel and taverna operates here.
Ammitis beach is about 1.5km from the village.
