Agia Kyriaki (9th Century) (Kalloni)

Agia Kyriaki church is located roughly 3km from Apiranthos on Naxos. It dates back to the Iconoclastic period of the 9th century, approximately, and constitutes one of the most significant Byzantine monuments in the entire Balkan region.

The church features a spate of frescoes, including a stand-out work depicting birds with ribbons on their necks, on the altar’s arch.

Directions for access The church may be accessed on foot via a 3km route beginning at the entrance of Apiranthos village. The route, estimated to be a one-hour walk, is especially pleasant as the natural setting varies along the way. This same route continues beyond the church and reaches the emery mines from where one may access the rural road leading back to Apiranthos.
